Mt Baw Baw is the closest downhill ski resort to Melbourne, being around a 2.5 hour drive east of the CBD and is a year round destination. Visitors return to Mt Baw Baw to experience this true alpine landscape and picturesque village in all seasons. Whether it be to escape to the High Country, away from the heat of the city in Summer or to enjoy a Winter holiday among the snowgums in freshly fallen snow, Mt Baw Baw is a popular choice.
While Mt Baw Baw has downhill skiing/snowboarding terrain to suit all levels, this family friendly resort is renowned as being more of a beginner – intermediate destination or for those that may not have been on the slopes for some time and want gentler terrain and perhaps a smaller, more compact village for their holiday in the snow.
Mt Baw Baw offers a wide range of accommodation to suit most budgets, from club lodges to self-contained luxury apartments. There’s also a couple of restaurants, a bistro and retail outlets. Car parking is all within walking distance to the village facilities and accommodation.
Group or private lessons are available for skiing or snowboarding from age 4 and up. Equipment, waterproof jackets and pants, ski/snowboard boots, walking/snowplay boots, helmets, snowshoes and toboggans can be hired in the village. You’ll need to bring your own gloves, beanies and goggles if required, as these can’t be hired, but they can be purchased at the hire outlet.
Toboggan and snowplay areas are available to all age groups and can be booked online. When snow conditions permit the resort builds a terrain/rail park for extra excitement and entertainment out on the slopes.
Outside the snow season, Mt Baw Baw attracts downhill mountain bikers who enjoy the thrill of descending through the snowgums and alpine wildflower meadows and if they have a chance, to take in the views out over the valley below! The resort also offers mountain bike shuttles to the summit on specific weekends.
Trail running and bushwalking at altitude offers cooler conditions, beautiful views and clean High Country air. Base yourself in the village to experience sunrise and sunset out amongst nature and even learn to ski or snowboard outside of the snow season on the dry ski slope that has been created. Guided bushwalks are also available. For details on all activities available at Mt Baw Baw, contact 03 5165 1136. See our activities link below for resort entry fees and downhill skiing/boarding rates.
The resort is on the edge of Mt Baw Baw National Park, ideal for bushwalking, camping and scenic drives. Bushwalks include the short Beech Gully Track, the longer Mt St Gwinear Track and Mushroom Rocks Walk. Winter visitors can experience a snowy landscape within the National Park and snow permitting, can enjoy cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, tobogganing and entry is free! Vehicles must carry correctly fitting wheel chains during the snow season and fit them where directed. For more information on Mt Baw Baw National Park follow this link
