Today is International Mountain Day and the @unitednations says:
"This International Mountain Day 2024 (IMD 2024) focuses precisely on the capacity and needs of its people through a triple approach: “Mountain solutions for a sustainable future – innovation, adaptation and youth.”
Innovation is essential for addressing complex mountain-related issues. It encompasses technological advancements as well as creative problem-solving such as climate-smart agriculture.
While dealing with climate change’s pressures on mountains, adaptation becomes imperative for building resilience and reducing vulnerability. Adaptation strategies include solutions such as ecosystem-based approaches to disaster risk reduction and the integration of Indigenous knowledge systems.
Lastly, the active participation of youth is essential for ensuring the long-term sustainability of mountain solutions. IMD 2024 promotes decent work and quality employment for young persons, accessible training, and entrepreneurship opportunities that contribute to the sustainable use of mountain resources."

Cooinbil Hut, on Long Plain, Kosciuszko National P

Cooinbil Hut, on Long Plain, Kosciuszko National Park, was built around 1908 by a grazier from Yass, called AB Triggs, and replaced another large homestead on the site that was built in the 1860’s. The hut consists of 2 rooms, both with an open fireplace (not for use nowadays) with a veranda on the South East side that has an extra ‘room’ attached to it, that was the original kitchen. In 1987 a storm brought down part of a Black Sallee that was standing close to the building, causing considerable damage. There are still some of these same trees around the hut and campground that are grand and beautiful specimens. Thankfully the National Parks & Wildlife Service and the Kosciuszko Huts Association decided to rebuild the hut and continue to maintain it today.

You’re in need of some mountain therapy, courtesy of Mother Nature, and although you’re heading to your favourite alpine resort, you know all of Australia’s alpine resorts offer the same opportunities for direct access to a variety of trails where nature’s treasures can be found. The days have warmed up, wildflowers are blooming and everywhere you look it feels like the natural world is rejuvenated after its Winter slumber. You have no destination in mind, just to be out amongst it and although there are new blooms opening like buttercups and alpine rusty pods, you find some of last Summer’s very faded and dishevelled looking everlasting daisies that have been frozen in time under snow. A scarlet robin dashes about chasing insects, showing flair and speed catching them in flight like an acrobat before landing back on a snowgum branch for only a moment, then taking to the air again in pursuit of more snacks. The snowgum doesn’t have the striking bark colours that they so often do, but upon closer inspection it has a beautiful, subtle pink blush on parts of its pale, smooth surface. Not all of it is smooth though as scribbly gum moths have left their artistic ‘scribbles’ behind, almost like nature’s graffiti artists. So many different textures surround you, the smooth bark interrupted by the aforementioned scribbles, lichen aged to perfection, all coarse and shaggy, hanging down like little beards and the wiry, shiny snow grass at your feet. All this within the first few hundred metres from the start of the trail as you happily lose track of time, immersed in mountain therapy…..
